Katerina Soukalova - Vachova was born in 1975. She took up the clarinet in her native Havlíčkův Brod. After graduating from the Prague Conservatory, where she studied with Jiří Stárek, in 1995, and a two -year scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, where she studied with Thea King, Joy Farrall, Anthony Pike, and Julian Farrell, she graduated with Jiří Hlaváč at the Academy of the Performing Arts, Prague, in 2001.
She has also attended courses in interpretation with the renowned French clarinetist Michel Lethiec.
While still a student she won several competitions including the Concertino Praga International Radio Competition. Her major successes include winning the international competition for the European Music Awards, Lisbon, 1994; First Prize in the Concours Européen d´interprétation Musicale de Moulins, 1999; and First Prize in the Prague Spring International Music Competition, 2002.
As a guest soloist Mrs. Vachova has appeared frequently with the Czech Philharmonic, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the Slovak Radio Orchestra, and other top ensembles. She also records regularly with the Czech Radio.
