Born in Japan in 1972, today Koji Kawamoto is undoubtedly one of the most promising conductors in the world. Since 2008/2009 Kawamoto has been the Music Director of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Pilsen, Czech Republic. Currently he is in his first season in Czech, the country, which has been producing great numbers of historical musicians, without saying one origin of music tradition, and he has already made musical “revolution” in performance and acquired as much audience as ever here in the country of revolution.
We should remember the fact that he is making a milestone for the music world on the basis that Koji Kawamoto is the first ever Music Director of Japanese in the Czech Republic.
Koji Kawamoto has performed with world-class orchestras across continents including:
Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra
Radio Symphony Orchestra Pilsen
Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra
North East German Philharmonic
Oshawa Durham Symphony Orchestra
Theater Vorpommern
Dnipropetrovsk State Philharmonic Orchestra Mainfrankentheater Würzburg
Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra Erzgebirgische Philharmonie Aue
Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra
Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra
Kyoto Symphony Orchestra
Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra
Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra
Sapporo Symphony Orchestra
Gunma Symphony Orchestra
Kyushu Symphony Orchestra
Century Orchestra Osaka
Osaka Symphoniker
Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra
In 1994 Koji Kawamoto won the third prize at the 10th Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting, just at the age of 21, needless to say, which astonished the music scene in Japan. And it can be said that this is a quite exceptional case for his age, since a conductor is such a profession of music as is needed to have all of musical abilities and mature control over them. So the fact has shown that he appeared before us as l’enfant terrible, or a musical prodigy, at the start of his career.
In 2001 Kawamoto made his debut in Europe with great admiration, conducting Opera Gala Concert as Memorial year of Verdi with Theater Vorpommern Germany. As the result of this success, he was invited to be the Principal Conductor of Theater Vorpommern and North East German Philharmonic.
In 2003 his career in the Asia entered a new phase. Kawamoto led a tour with North East German Philharmonic to great success around South East Asia: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei.
In 2007 Koji Kawamoto was yet again Prizewinner at the 59th Prague Spring International Music Competition, as a matter of course engagements unceasingly following across the oceans.
Kawamoto studied music mainly at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music under Professors Hiroshi Wakasugi, Francis Travis and Hiroyuki Odano, also having the privilege to study under conducting giants Sergiu Celibidache and Valery Gergiev. He continued his studies with Gustav Meier in the USA.
Now Koji Kawamoto is surely taking steps toward real Maestro, and with a vivid sense of expression and sought for music, Maestro Koji Kawamoto shall continue to inspire people and orchestras around the world!
